I was a bit hesitant about buying a cookbook based on The Hunger Games. I kept thinking 'what recipes were even in the book?'. But as I read The Unofficial Recipes of The Hunger Games it became obvious there were tons of meals which I had over looked in my reading. I was extremely glad I did buy it. The great thing about this book is that is breaks down the meals you are looking for: breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and dessert. The cookbook reads much like the novels that inspired it did, such as following the same adventurous path and introducing the characters and what they ate throughout the story. A great example is the Tesserae Hearth Bread Loaf, which gives you the joy of being able to make your own bread, and allows you to imitate the character of Peeta. My favorite recipe in the first chapter is the Fried Catfish and Roasted Katniss tubers, but I can't wait to try making the Mellark Bakery's goat cheese and apple tarts. As the cookbook goes on, just like The Hunger Games, the food gets more elaborate and interesting. The food inspired by the capitol is the most intricate and delicious sounding, like the Tribute Lamb Chops. The Unofficial Recipes of The Hunger Games was a fun read, giving many at home ideas to fans of the series. I really enjoyed that each recipe included in the cookbook had a specific tie in to the story, sometimes even describing where Katniss or other characters ate the food along their journey. It easily connects the fans to the story, through the meals they are preparing themselves, which was such a nice touch. There are also ideas and menus for throwing your own Hunger Games parties, which would be great for kids and families!
